What explains the link between marijuana use and severe mental illness? One possibility, according to Dr. Large, cheap marlboro cigarettes, is that pot smoking actually causes psychosis. Other possibilities, wholesale marlboro cigarettes online, marlboro lights cigarettes, he said, are that pot might hasten the onset of psychotic symptoms in vulnerable people – or make symptoms of psychosis worse.
But other scientists say there are alternative explanations. Michael Rice, a psychiatric nurse practitioner at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, cheap marlboro cigarettes wholesale, cheap cigarettes online, told HealthDay that people who are predisposed to schizophrenia might gravitate to smoking pot because it has a beneficial anti-inflammatory effect. Whatever the explanation, Dr. Large and his colleagues are eager to publicize the risks pot smoking poses to young children, writing “Even if the onset of psychosis were inevitable (for a particular individual), an extra two or three years of psychosis-free functioning could allow many patients to achieve the important developmental milestones,” MSNBC reported.
“I’m not a marketing expert,” Large said, wholesale marlboro cigarettes online, newport cigarettes website, “but we have to find a way to tell young kids to hold off.” Even through a recession in which other tax revenues have ebbed for the state, about $700 million or more each year continues to flow into the state Treasury from New Jersey’s $2.70-per-pack tax on cigarettes — the sixth highest cigarette tax in the nation. There may be legislation on the books that called for millions to be spent on anti-smoking and smoking cessation programs from this hefty pot of cash, but there are no dictates about how money is spent in the state budgets that are passed each June.
“The budget overrides the law. . . . A lot of people don’t understand that just because we have a law that calls for spending on these things, that doesn’t mean it happens,” said Edward Kazimir, an ardent anti-smoking campaigner who helped start the Comprehensive Tobacco Control Program in the state Department of Health and Senior Services when he worked there for more than two decades. Regardless of the workplace smoking ban, new customers for Big Tobacco are still being developed. Why?
The tobacco companies spend about $226 million a year marketing their products in New Jersey, according to the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids. Much of this advertising is squarely targeted at high-school and college-age students, wholesale marlboro cigarettes, while some is also aimed at other specific populations such as the poor and minority groups. “In other states where they’re cutting or eliminating altogether funding for anti-smoking and smoking cessation programs, they’re seeing smoking rates go up,” said Brown of the American Lung Association.
“Florida and Massachusetts are good examples. When they started to cut their funding, their smoking rates went right up. We’re heading in that direction.” Indeed, most agree with Brown that, without money to maintain anti-smoking campaigns that have proven to work, smoking rates in New Jersey among both adults and teenagers will inch back up over time. |
