That's how it was for Kari Kremer and Bob and Ellie Fiermonti in founding Kari's Kreations with Ellie's Shoes on Fifth Avenue South in Naples. The result of a partnership between the longtime friends, the boutique gives the retailers a chance to combine their strengths while showcasing their wares.
The shop celebrated its anniversary this month. It is the second boutique for Kremer,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who also operates Kari's Kreations in Neapolitan Way,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and has been in the women's fashion business for the past 10 years.
"I try to do unique fashions that no one else carries,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Kremer said. "I also have a lot of artists that do clothes for me, like hand-painted and batik."
Some of those designers include Naples resident Leigh Herndon,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who produces batik silk works,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and the Pine Island-based Z-Wear,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which offers hand-painted, washable silk separates. Kari's Kreations also sells accessories,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], such as hats, scarves and jewelry.
The appeal of such apparel is that it is different,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Kremer said.
"You're not going to see it all over town,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," she said. "It's one-of-a-kind."
Married for 49 years, the Fiermontis hail from New Jersey. 41 East where every pair of shoes was the same price: $12.88.
While they were running that shop,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Flamingo Island Flea Market in Bonita Springs was beginning to gain steam. The couple was approached about opening a shop there.
"That was when we really started to experiment with different types of shoes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," said Bob Fiermonti.
Among the shoes they began to sell - and continue to sell - are the European-made brands Fly Flot and Spring Step. About 95 percent of what the Fiermontis sell is made in Europe, Bob Fiermonti said. At Kari's Kreations with Ellie's Shoes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they've added additional brands, some of which are custom-made just for them,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], such as Brazilian brand Stephanie. They also sell the American-made brand Onex,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a fashion-forward shoe that Bob Fiermonti describes as having "a lot of bling."
In total,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Kari's Kreations with Ellie's Shoes boasts 10 different shoe brands. The average price range is $60 to $75.
The couple still operates a shop at Flamingo Island in Bonita Springs. But it was at another flea market, however, that they struck up a friendship with Kremer and began discussing the possibility of opening a boutique together.
"We just connected," Fiermonti said.
"I said,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "let's do something together,'" Kremer said.
When a spot on Fifth Avenue South became available,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Kremer didn't hesitate. She contacted the Fiermontis and two days later, they signed a lease on the retail space at 505 Fifth Ave. S.
"I've always wanted to be on Fifth Avenue and my customers used to say, 'You belong on Fifth Avenue,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],'" Kremer said.
Still, Kremer and the Fiermontis knew that being on Fifth Avenue South would mean more competition than they'd previously encountered. Bob Fiermonti said he had confidence in his new partner's ability to meet that competition with her characteristic style,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], sophistication and customer service.
"It's just working hard together and taking care of the public together," Fiermonti said.
Kremer and the Fiermontis are pleased with the way Fifth Avenue South is changing, too. As part of the downtown district's rebranding, each block has an assigned "block captain" that works with business owners to keep them informed of news and happenings; that's been especially helpful in their new location, Kremer said.
